Science and Technology Capacity in the framework of the Millennium Development Goals.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are eight goals to be achieved by 2015 in response to the world’s main development challenges. The eight goals are: 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, 2. Achieve universal primary education, 3. Promote gender equality and empower women, 4. Reduce child mortality, 5. Improve maternal health, 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases., 7. Ensure Environmental Sustainability, and 8. Develop a Global Partnerships for Development. As paraphrased by Kofi Annan, the UN secretary General, these Goals have been “adopted by the world’s government as a blueprint for building a better world in the 21st century. In short, the MDGs represent a worldwide cooperation in tackling the world’s main development challenges of promoting poverty reduction, education, maternal health, gender equality, and of combating child mortality, AIDS and other diseases. These lofty goals are achievable if all factors work together and do their part.

The Kenyan Government, for example, in order to address the issue of poverty reduction stated that: “Our mission is to alleviate poverty through the creation of jobs and improvement of livelihoods for rural and urban poor in line with Millennium Development Goals.” The Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) in organizing this workshop shows its commitment and willingness to help our government make strides in realizing the MDGs.

The workshop identified Capacity Building, Application of Science and Technology, Health and Natural Resources, Environmental Concerns, and Water Resources and Sustainability as pertinent areas that are closely linked to the attainment of the MDGs, and consequently focused on some key issues under these broad areas. All articles in this proceeding addressed different aspects of the MDGs.
